What to see with a rental car

Side is an ancient harbour town on a small peninsula, where the Temple of Apollo stands at the water’s edge and Roman columns line the way to the beach. The old town is largely closed to traffic, so you park outside the ancient gate and walk in.

Most hotels lie along the beaches to the east and west, and many guests rent a car for just a few days to see the inland sights.

  • The Temple of Apollo and the ancient theatre
  • Manavgat Waterfall and boat trips on the Manavgat River
  • The Roman theatre at Aspendos
  • Köprülü Canyon National Park and rafting
  • Long sandy beaches east and west of town

What to see in and around Side, area by area

The ancient peninsula

Side’s columns stand among cafés and shops. Walk from the monumental Vespasian Gate past the colonnaded street and the great theatre to the Temple of Apollo at the tip of the peninsula. The small Side Museum sits in a restored Roman bathhouse and is worth half an hour.

Manavgat and the Green Canyon

The town of Manavgat has a wide riverside waterfall and boat trips down the river to the sea. Inland, boat tours cross the bright green reservoir of the Oymapınar Dam, known as the Green Canyon, between forested cliffs.

Seleucia in the forest

Above Manavgat, the ruins of ancient Seleucia (also called Lyrbe) lie among pine trees, with an agora and baths. It is quiet and shaded, and a short drive from the coast – a good contrast to the busy ancient town.

Köprülü Canyon and Selge

The Köprüçay river carves a canyon used for rafting, crossed by the Roman Oluk Bridge. A winding road continues up to the ruins of Selge in the mountain village of Altınkaya, where the theatre faces the peaks.

Beaches around Side and where to park

West Beach

A long sandy beach running west from the peninsula, backed by hotels and beach bars. Public access points with parking are along the beach road.

East Beach

Closer to the ancient city and calmer in the afternoons. Use the car parks near the ancient gate and walk the last few minutes.

Sorgun

East of Side, a strip of pine forest backs the beach, giving shade and a quieter feel. Public beach entrances have parking areas.

Kumköy and Çolaklı

Long sandy beaches west of town, mainly with resort hotels but with public sections. Good for an easy beach day without town traffic.

When to visit Side and rent a car

Side is one of the most seasonal places on the coast. Published rental averages are lowest in January at about €22 a day and climb steeply from May to a July peak of about €58. Most hotels and restaurants open from April to October. Late May and late September–October bring a warm sea and lower prices than midsummer, and boat tours to the Green Canyon run all season.

Before you book

Deposit, payment card and tolls: know the difference before you book

Driving in Side: parking, roads and tips

Parking in Side

Use the paid car parks outside the old town gate; the ancient centre is largely pedestrianised.

The D400

The main road between Antalya and Alanya passes Side. It is a free, busy dual carriageway.

Inland roads

Roads to Köprülü Canyon narrow as they climb. Drive slowly and watch for tour buses.

Getting into the old town

Private cars cannot drive into the ancient peninsula. Park in the paid car parks by the gate and walk about ten minutes to the harbour.

Manavgat junctions

Side is reached from the D400 through Manavgat, with busy roundabouts and a market area. Allow extra time at midday in summer.

Canyon tour traffic

In the morning, the road to Köprülü Canyon fills with rafting buses and minibuses. Drive calmly and pull over where safe to let them pass.
