The Aegean airport with motorway access.

Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport has separate international and domestic terminals. Rental desks and meet-and-greet points are in arrivals; some local companies hand over cars at a nearby office reached by a short shuttle.

This is the most practical airport for the central Aegean. The Çeşme peninsula with Alaçatı’s windmills and stone streets is about an hour west by motorway. Ephesus, the Virgin Mary’s House and Şirince are around an hour south, and Kuşadası a little further.

Izmir is also a good start for a longer loop: Pergamon to the north, Pamukkale inland, or down the coast to Bodrum and Dalaman with a one-way return.

Çeşme and Alaçatı are very busy on summer weekends, when many Izmir residents head to the coast. Travel on Friday evenings or Sunday afternoons can be slow.

Motorway tolls (HGS)

Turkish toll roads are fully electronic. Rental cars carry an HGS tag and the company charges the tolls after the rental, so ask how it bills them.

How tolls work
On the road

Driving from Izmir Airport: routes and tolls

West to Çeşme and Alaçatı

The O-32 motorway runs from Izmir to the Çeşme peninsula. It is tolled electronically, so the car’s HGS tag records the trip and the rental company bills it later.

South to Ephesus and Kuşadası

The O-31 Izmir–Aydın motorway passes close to the airport and leads towards Selçuk and Kuşadası. It is also tolled electronically. Free state roads run in parallel but are slower.

Into Izmir

The city centre is about 25 minutes away outside rush hour. Parking around Konak and Alsancak is limited; use a paid car park.

Motorway junctions

The O-31 and O-32 junctions are close to the airport, both tolled through HGS.

Izmir ring road

The ring road is busy at rush hour. Allow extra time when returning the car.

Sunday evenings

Traffic from Çeşme back to Izmir is heavy on summer Sunday evenings.

Good to know in Turkey

  1. Drive on the right and overtake on the left.

  4. Seat belts are compulsory in every seat; phones only hands-free.
  5. Motorway, bridge and some tunnel tolls are electronic. Do not stop at the toll gates.
  6. In an accident, call the rental company first and follow its instructions. Insurance usually needs an official report.
