Quick answer

Is renting a car in Marmaris worth it?

Yes, if you want to leave the resort strip. The Bozburun and Datça peninsulas, Akyaka on the Gökova Gulf and the Dalyan river are some of the coast’s best day trips, and buses to them are slow. Local suppliers offer cars with no deposit and no credit card, from Dalaman Airport or in Marmaris.

What to see in and around Marmaris, area by area

Town, castle and marina

Marmaris Castle, now a small museum, rises above the old town lanes. The marina and harbour promenade fill with yachts, restaurants and evening walkers, and gulets leave daily for the bays of the gulf.

İçmeler, Turunç and Amos

İçmeler, 8 km west, is calmer than Marmaris, with a long beach. Over the hill, Turunç sits in a green bay, and the ruins of ancient Amos look down on the sea above Kumlubük.

The Bozburun peninsula

Orhaniye’s “Kız Kumu” sandbar lets you walk far out into the sea. Further on are the fishing villages of Selimiye, Söğüt and Bozburun, and Bayır village, whose square is shaded by a huge old plane tree.

Datça, Akyaka and Sedir Island

Datça and ancient Knidos lie at the end of their own peninsula. To the north, Akyaka sits on the Gulf of Gökova, and boats from the Çamlı area go to Sedir Island, whose protected beach sand is said to have been brought for Cleopatra.

Beaches around Marmaris and where to park

Marmaris and Uzunyalı

The long town beach runs west from the centre towards Uzunyalı, lined by hotels and bars. Paid parking is set back from the seafront.

Kız Kumu at Orhaniye

Shallow water and the sandbar make this ideal for children. Parking is at the roadside restaurants and beach areas, often in exchange for a drink or meal.

Akyaka

A beach where the cold, clear Azmak river meets the sea. Afternoon winds make it one of Turkey’s kitesurfing spots.

Kumlubük

A sandy bay with beach clubs, about 25 km from Marmaris via Turunç. The road is winding, so allow time.

Driving in Marmaris: parking, roads and tips

Peninsula roads

Roads to Bozburun and Datça are narrow and twisty. Allow extra time and fuel up in Marmaris.

Parking

Marmaris centre and the marina have paid car parks; spaces are scarce in July and August.

From the airport

From Dalaman the route follows the D400 west past Köyceğiz, then turns south to the coast.

Peninsula hairpins

Roads on the Bozburun peninsula climb and descend with sharp hairpins. Use low gears, give way to buses and trucks on the narrowest sections and avoid driving them tired.

Town and marina parking

The centre has one-way streets and limited parking near the marina. Use paid car parks and walk to the harbour.

The road to Datça

The drive to Datça is about 70 km of winding road. Fill up in Marmaris and plan a full day if you continue to Knidos.
