What to see with a rental car

Cappadocia is a high volcanic plateau in central Turkey, famous for its fairy chimneys, rock-cut churches and the hot-air balloons that rise at dawn. Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp and Avanos are the main bases.

Most rental cars here are collected in Kayseri, the nearest large city and airport. Some suppliers deliver to Nevşehir airport or to hotels in the valleys; the search shows those options.

Driving in Cappadocia: parking, roads and tips

Winter driving

Snow and ice are common from December to February. Ask the supplier about winter tyres and drive slowly on minor roads.

Valley roads

Many viewpoints are reached on gravel tracks. Drive carefully and respect closed tracks.

Parking

Göreme’s centre is small; use the car parks and your hotel’s parking.

Dawn balloon traffic

Before sunrise, minibuses and 4×4s rush to launch sites and viewpoints. Drive slowly and park only in proper spaces.

Stay on paved roads

Many valley tracks are used by ATV tours. Rental agreements usually exclude off-road driving, and soft sand or mud can trap a car.

From Kayseri

The drive from Kayseri passes İncesu and Ürgüp. In winter, ask for winter tyres and check the forecast before leaving.
