What to see with a rental car

Kalkan tumbles down a hillside to a small harbour on the Lycian coast. Its whitewashed streets are steep and narrow, and many visitors stay in villas on the slopes above, where a car is almost essential.

The coast here is one of Turkey’s most beautiful drives: the D400 runs high above the sea past Kaputaş to Kaş, and west to Patara’s long beach and the ruins of Xanthos.

What to see in and around Kalkan, area by area

Kalkan old town and harbour

White houses draped in bougainvillea climb the hillside above a small harbour. Evenings are about rooftop restaurants and the harbour promenade; in the day, small boats leave for nearby coves and swimming platforms.

Patara, Xanthos and the Letoon

Patara was a major city of the Lycian League, with a restored assembly building, a lighthouse and a colonnaded street. Xanthos, the old Lycian capital, and the sanctuary of the Letoon together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bezirgan and İslamlar

In the hills above Kalkan, the plateau village of Bezirgan keeps old wooden granaries and farmhouses on the Lycian Way, and İslamlar is known for trout restaurants among pine trees. Both are cooler than the coast in summer.

Kaş and the coast road

Kaş, half an hour east, has an ancient theatre facing the sea, Lycian tombs in its streets and a lively harbour with boat trips to Kekova. The drive passes the famous Kaputaş beach.

Beaches near Kalkan and where to park

Kaputaş Beach

A turquoise cove below the road, reached by a long staircase. Roadside parking is limited, so arrive before 10 a.m. in summer. Waves can be strong, and the only shade is from rented umbrellas.

Patara Beach

One of Turkey’s longest sandy beaches. Access is through the ancient site, and the beach closes at night because loggerhead turtles nest here. The car park is at the end of the road beyond the ruins.

Kalkan town beach and lidos

A small pebble beach in town, plus swimming platforms around the bay. Some lidos run shuttle boats from the harbour.
