What to see with a rental car

Kemer lies south-west of Antalya, at the foot of the Taurus Mountains. The D400 reaches it through a series of tunnels along the mountainside, and continues south past pine-covered bays.

With a car you can swim in the three ancient harbours of Phaselis, ride the cable car up Tahtalı Mountain, and see the Chimaera flames above Çıralı after dark.

  • The Olympos cable car up Tahtalı Mountain, over 2,300 m
  • Olympos ruins and Çıralı beach
  • The Chimaera (Yanartaş) natural flames at night

What to see in and around Kemer, area by area

Kemer town and marina

The marina and Moonlight Park form the centre, with a pebbly beach, cafés and a seafront promenade backed by mountains. The open-air Yörük Park on the headland shows the traditional tents and crafts of the region’s nomads.

Göynük and Beldibi

North of Kemer, Göynük Canyon offers a walk and swim through a narrow gorge with cold, clear water. Beldibi has quieter pebble beaches below steep cliffs, and the road between them is lined with small family hotels.

Phaselis, Tekirova and Tahtalı

South of town, ancient Phaselis lies around three natural harbours in the pine forest, with an aqueduct and a paved main street. Nearby, the Olympos cable car climbs Mount Tahtalı to 2,365 m, with views along the whole coast on clear days.

Çıralı, Olympos and Adrasan

Further south, Çıralı’s long beach leads to the overgrown ruins of Olympos, and the Chimaera flames burn on the hillside above. Adrasan, about an hour and a quarter from Kemer, is a sheltered bay known for boat trips to hidden coves.

Beaches around Kemer and where to park

Moonlight Beach

The main town beach, pebbly with clear water and the marina next door. Paid parking is near Moonlight Park and the marina.

Phaselis bays

Swim in the ancient harbours among the ruins. The site has its own entrance and car park; arrive early in summer, before the boats.

Çıralı Beach

A long, peaceful pebble beach and a loggerhead turtle nesting area, with low-rise guesthouses behind it. Park along the village lanes, not on the beach.

Adrasan Bay

A sandy-pebble bay with shallow water and boat trips to the coves of the Lycian coast. Parking is easier outside the peak afternoon hours.

The D400 tunnels

The road from Antalya runs through several tunnels; keep to the limits and use dipped headlights.

Road to Çıralı

The side road down to Çıralı and Olympos is steep and winding. Take it slowly.

Parking

Tunnels on the D400

Several tunnels separate Antalya and Kemer. Switch on dipped headlights, don’t overtake inside and expect speed cameras.

Steep side roads

The turn-offs to Çıralı, Olympos and Adrasan descend steeply with hairpin bends. Use a low gear downhill instead of riding the brakes.

Forest roads

The roads to Phaselis and the Tahtalı cable car are narrow and wooded, with tour buses in summer. Drive slowly and keep right.

Good to know in Turkey

  1. Drive on the right and overtake on the left.
  2. Speed limits for cars are usually 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on two-way roads, 110 km/h on divided roads and 130 km/h on motorways. Follow the signs.
  3. The alcohol limit for car drivers is 0.5 g/l. The safest choice is not to drink at all.
  4. Seat belts are compulsory in every seat; phones only hands-free.
  5. Motorway, bridge and some tunnel tolls are electronic. Do not stop at the toll gates.
  6. In an accident, call the rental company first and follow its instructions. Insurance usually needs an official report.
