Quick answer

Can I rent a car at Istanbul Airport?

Yes. You can compare live offers for pickup at Istanbul Airport (IST), on the European side of the city near Arnavutköy. Taksim and the historic peninsula are about 45 km away, usually an hour or more in traffic. Bosphorus bridges, the Eurasia Tunnel and the fastest motorways are tolled electronically through the car’s HGS tag.

Istanbul Airport is a single, very large terminal. Rental desks and meeting points are on the arrivals side, and some companies hand over cars in the multi-storey car park. Walking from the gate to the car can take a while, so allow extra time after landing and keep the supplier’s phone number handy.

Think about when you actually need the car. Central Istanbul has heavy traffic, limited parking and excellent public transport, so many travellers spend their city days without a car and collect it on the day they leave for Cappadocia, the Aegean or the Black Sea. You can also return a car here before a flight and avoid driving in the centre.

If your route continues into Asia, compare this airport with Sabiha Gökçen on the Asian side. Starting there saves a Bosphorus crossing and an hour or more of city traffic.

Rush hours in Istanbul run roughly 07:00–10:00 and 16:00–20:00, and Friday evenings are the slowest. A pickup outside those times makes the first drive much easier.
Destination guide

Where to base yourself after landing at Istanbul Airport

The historic peninsula and Beyoğlu (about 1 h)

Most visitors stay here, but the car is of little use in the old city, where parking is scarce and public transport is excellent. Consider collecting it later at the airport or in town.

Thrace and Edirne

West of the airport, motorways lead towards Edirne and the Greek and Bulgarian borders. Most rental agreements do not allow driving out of Turkey, so plan Edirne as a day trip.

The Black Sea coast

Beaches at Karaburun and Kilyos are close to the airport, making them an easy first or last stop, with fish restaurants by the sea.

The Asian side and Anatolia

The North Marmara Motorway and the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge bypass the city towards Anatolia and the Black Sea coast, avoiding the busiest central traffic.

Easy stops near Istanbul Airport

Karaburun

A Black Sea village with beaches and fish restaurants, close to the airport. Quiet outside summer weekends.

Belgrad Forest

Between the airport and the city, with walking trails and picnic areas. Car parks fill on weekend mornings.

Garipçe

A fishing village at the northern entrance to the Bosphorus, below the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, known for breakfast and seafood.

Best time to go

When Istanbul Airport is busiest

Istanbul Airport is busy all year, with a peak in summer and waves of departures in the early morning. Published rental averages for Istanbul peak in May at about €58 a day and are lowest in September at about €36.

Plan your arrival

Collect at the airport or later in the city?

If you spend your first days in the historic centre, a car will mostly stay parked. Many visitors take a taxi or the metro into the city, then collect the car on the day they leave Istanbul. If you are heading straight to Thrace, the Black Sea or Anatolia, collecting at Istanbul Airport saves a trip through the city. For the Asian side, compare with Sabiha Gökçen.

Deposit, payment card and tolls: know the difference before you book

These three conditions cause most surprises at a rental desk in Istanbul Airport. Each offer shows them before you pay.

No Credit Card

Local suppliers commonly accept a debit card or cash at pickup. International brands usually want a credit card in the main driver’s name.

Motorway tolls (HGS)

Turkish toll roads are fully electronic. Rental cars carry an HGS tag and the company charges the tolls after the rental, so ask how it bills them.

Driving from Istanbul Airport: routes and tolls

Into the city

Navigation apps offer a free route via Göktürk and Kemerburgaz and faster tolled sections of the Northern Marmara Motorway. Either way, traffic decides the journey time more than distance.

Across the Bosphorus

The three Bosphorus bridges and the Eurasia Tunnel are tolled. Cameras read the rental car’s HGS tag, so you do not stop to pay, and the company charges the crossings after your rental.

Out of Istanbul

The Northern Marmara Motorway and the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge bypass the city towards Anatolia; the O-3 heads west to Edirne and the Greek and Bulgarian borders. Long-distance motorways are tolled.

Inside the airport complex

Distances between the terminal, car parks and rental areas are long. Allow time when collecting and returning the car.

Motorway tolls

The North Marmara Motorway and the bridges are tolled through HGS. You do not pay at the booth.

Fuel

Fill up on the main access roads before the final stretch to the airport, and keep the receipt.

Good to know in Turkey

  1. Drive on the right and overtake on the left.
  2. Speed limits for cars are usually 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on two-way roads, 110 km/h on divided roads and 130 km/h on motorways. Follow the signs.
  3. The alcohol limit for car drivers is 0.5 g/l. The safest choice is not to drink at all.
  4. Seat belts are compulsory in every seat; phones only hands-free.
  5. Motorway, bridge and some tunnel tolls are electronic. Do not stop at the toll gates.
  6. In an accident, call the rental company first and follow its instructions. Insurance usually needs an official report.

Short answers for a smoother start. The conditions of the car you choose always take priority.

More car rental questions
Can I rent a car at Istanbul Airport without a credit card?

Selected local offers accept a debit card or cash for the deposit and balance. Use the no-credit-card filter in the search and read the payment notes on the offer. International brands usually require a credit card in the main driver’s name.

How do I pay tolls on the Bosphorus bridges and the Eurasia Tunnel?

You do not pay at the crossing. Toll points are electronic and read the HGS tag on the rental car. The rental company receives the charges and bills them after the rental, often from the deposit or with the final invoice.

Should I drive in central Istanbul?

It is possible, but traffic is heavy and parking in Sultanahmet, Beyoğlu and Kadıköy is scarce. Many visitors use public transport in the city and collect the car on the day they leave Istanbul.

Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gökçen: which is better for a road trip?

Choose Istanbul Airport for the European side, Thrace and Edirne. Choose Sabiha Gökçen for routes into Anatolia, Bursa or the Aegean via the Osmangazi Bridge, because it is already on the Asian side.

How early should I return the car before my flight?

Allow for traffic on the way to the airport and for the handover itself, then add the airline’s check-in time. On weekday afternoons the drive from the city can take much longer than the distance suggests.

Do I need an International Driving Permit in Istanbul?

It depends on your licence. UK government advice says UK drivers need a 1968 International Driving Permit or a UK licence notarised in Turkish. German and Polish licences are recognised for tourist stays, and licences in non-Latin scripts, such as Arabic or Cyrillic, need an IDP as well. The offer page shows the company’s licence rules.

Can I collect my car later in the city?

Yes. Search for a city pickup point or hotel delivery and choose the day you leave Istanbul.

How far is Edirne from Istanbul Airport?

Roughly two and a half hours by motorway, depending on traffic.

Are there beaches near Istanbul Airport?

Yes, at Karaburun and Kilyos on the Black Sea, both close to the airport.

Where do I meet the rental company?

Your voucher shows the meeting point, often the arrivals hall or the multi-storey car park. Allow time for long walks.

Can I drive a rental car into Greece or Bulgaria?

Usually not. Most rental companies do not allow cars to leave Turkey; ask before booking.
