These three conditions cause most surprises at a rental desk in Turkey. Each offer shows them before you pay.

No Deposit

Many local suppliers rent without a security deposit or accept it in cash. Others block an amount on a card until the car is returned. The offer shows which.

No Credit Card

Local suppliers commonly accept a debit card or cash at pickup. International brands usually want a credit card in the main driver’s name.

Motorway tolls (HGS)

Turkish toll roads are fully electronic. Rental cars carry an HGS tag and the company charges the tolls after the rental, so ask how it bills them.

Driving in Turkey: rules and tolls in brief

Good to know in Turkey

  1. Drive on the right and overtake on the left.
  2. Speed limits for cars are usually 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on two-way roads, 110 km/h on divided roads and 130 km/h on motorways. Follow the signs.
  3. The alcohol limit for car drivers is 0.5 g/l. The safest choice is not to drink at all.
  4. Seat belts are compulsory in every seat; phones only hands-free.
  5. Motorway, bridge and some tunnel tolls are electronic. Do not stop at the toll gates.
  6. In an accident, call the rental company first and follow its instructions. Insurance usually needs an official report.
Full driving guide

Electronic tolls (HGS)

Motorways, the Bosphorus crossings and some bridges and tunnels have no cash booths. The rental car’s HGS tag pays, and the company bills you afterwards.

Fuel

Petrol is benzin, diesel is motorin. Most stations are attended and accept cards. Fill up before mountain roads and remote coastal stretches.

Emergencies

Call 112 for police, ambulance and fire. For accidents and breakdowns, call the rental company too.

Questions about car rental in Turkey

Clear answers for a smoother start. The conditions of the car you choose always take priority.

Can I rent a car in Turkey without a deposit?

Yes. Many local suppliers rent cars with no security deposit, a low deposit or a deposit you can leave in cash. Use the no-deposit filter in the search and read the offer’s payment notes. A zero deposit does not remove your responsibility for damage outside the insurance, for fuel, tolls or traffic fines.

Can I rent a car in Turkey without a credit card?

Yes. Many local suppliers accept a debit card or cash for the deposit and the balance at pickup. International brands usually require a credit card in the main driver’s name. Use the no-credit-card filter and check how each payment is taken.

How much does car rental in Turkey cost?

Published monthly averages for Turkey range from about €20 a day in February to €41 a day in July. Resorts such as Bodrum, Belek and Side are more expensive in summer, while Fethiye and Marmaris are among the cheapest in winter. Your exact total depends on dates, car type and insurance.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Turkey?

It depends on your licence. UK licence holders need a 1968 International Driving Permit or a UK licence notarised in Turkish, according to UK government travel advice. German and Polish licences are recognised for tourist stays, and licences in non-Latin scripts, such as Arabic, Cyrillic or Chinese, need an IDP or an official translation. Visitors can drive on a foreign licence for up to six months after entering Turkey. Some rental companies ask for an IDP anyway, so it is the safe choice if you are unsure.

How do I pay motorway tolls in a Turkish rental car?

You do not pay at the toll gate. Turkish motorways, bridges and some tunnels use the electronic HGS system, and rental cars carry an HGS tag. The rental company receives the charges and bills them after the rental, often with a small service fee. Do not stop at the gates or remove the tag.

Can I add full insurance to a car rental in Turkey?

Yes. Many offers include basic cover and let you add full coverage that lowers the excess, sometimes to zero. Compare the excess and the exclusions, such as tyres, glass and the underside of the car.

Which airport should I fly into for my holiday in Turkey?

Antalya (AYT) for Belek, Side, Alanya and Kemer; Dalaman (DLM) for Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, Göcek, Dalyan and Marmaris; Milas–Bodrum (BJV) for the Bodrum peninsula; Izmir (ADB) for Çeşme, Alaçatı, Ephesus and Kuşadası; Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) for Istanbul.

What is the minimum age to rent a car in Turkey?

Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 and to have held a full licence for one or two years. Premium cars and large vans can require drivers aged 25 or older, and young-driver fees can apply. The exact rule is in each offer.

Can I take a Turkish rental car to Greece, Bulgaria or Georgia?

Usually not. Most companies do not allow their cars to leave Turkey, and the few that do require written permission, extra insurance and a fee arranged in advance. Ask before booking if you plan to cross a border.

Who provides the car I book on TurkeyAutoRent.com?

The rental company named in your offer supplies the car and the rental agreement. Search and booking run through Localrent, and TurkeyAutoRent.com is an independent comparison and referral website that adds no fee.
