What to see with a rental car

Alanya sits on a rocky peninsula crowned by a Seljuk castle, with long beaches on both sides. The town stretches for kilometres along the D400, so a car saves taxi fares between your hotel, the old harbour and the beaches.

Inland, the Taurus Mountains rise steeply behind the coast. Within half an hour you can be at Dim Cave and the restaurants along the Dim River, or on the mountain roads towards Sapadere Canyon.

  • Alanya Castle and the Red Tower above the harbour
  • Damlataş Cave and Cleopatra Beach in town
  • Dim Cave and lunch by the Dim River
  • Sapadere Canyon in the Taurus Mountains
  • Manavgat Waterfall and Side on the way west

What to see in and around Alanya, area by area

The castle peninsula

Alanya Castle crowns the rocky headland, with the Inner Castle, the Ehmedek quarter and views down both coasts. At sea level, the octagonal Red Tower and the old Seljuk shipyard guard the harbour. The cable car from Damlataş beach saves the steep climb on hot days.

Harbour and sea caves

Boat trips from the harbour circle the peninsula to the Phosphorus Cave, Lovers’ Cave and Pirates’ Cave, with swimming stops in clear water. On land, the Damlataş Cave by the beach is known for its humid air and stalactites.

The quieter east coast

East of town, Mahmutlar and Kargıcak are calmer, with long beaches and local markets. Further on, near Gazipaşa, the hillside ruins of Antiochia ad Cragum and the ancient city of Selinus see few visitors, and the coast becomes greener and less built up.

Into the Taurus Mountains

Half an hour inland, the Dim River valley has shaded restaurants on platforms above the water, and Dim Cave is close by. Sapadere Canyon, about an hour away, has a walkway past waterfalls and pools, and the mountain villages on the way keep a slower pace of life.

Alanya’s beaches and where to park

Cleopatra Beach

The long sandy beach west of the castle, with fine sand and clear water. Park in paid lots or side streets back from the seafront road, which gets busy in the evenings.

Damlataş Beach

A small sheltered beach next to Damlataş Cave and the cable car station. The nearby paid car park is convenient but fills early.

Keykubat Beach

The long beach east of the peninsula, lined by a promenade and hotels. Side streets inland have more parking than the seafront.

İncekum

Around 25 km west near Avsallar, a sandy, pine-backed beach with shallow water that suits families. It makes an easy stop on the way to or from Side.
