Quick answer

Is renting a car in Antalya worth it?

Yes, if you want to see more than the city. Antalya has a compact old town, but Termessos, Perge, Aspendos, the Düden waterfalls and the coast to Kemer are far easier by car. Local suppliers offer cars with no deposit and no credit card, 25 minutes away at the airport or delivered in the city.

What to see with a rental car

Antalya is a big, busy city wrapped around a Roman harbour. The walled old town, Kaleiçi, is a maze of lanes best seen on foot, with Konyaaltı Beach to the west and Lara Beach to the east.

With a car, the ancient sites of the Pamphylian plain and the mountain city of Termessos are less than an hour away, and the coast road leads on to Kemer and the Lycian shore.

  • Kaleiçi, Hadrian’s Gate and the old harbour
  • The Lower Düden Waterfall pouring into the sea
  • Konyaaltı and Lara beaches
  • Termessos, a ruined city high in the mountains
  • Perge and Aspendos on the plain east of the city

What to see in and around Antalya, area by area

Kaleiçi and the old harbour

The walled old town is a maze of Ottoman houses, small hotels and cafés. Enter through Hadrian’s Gate, look for the Fluted Minaret and the Hıdırlık Tower, and finish at the Roman harbour, where boat trips leave along the cliffs to the Düden waterfall.

Konyaaltı and the west

Konyaaltı beach park runs for several kilometres west of the centre, with Antalya Museum at its eastern end. The museum is one of Turkey’s great archaeological collections, with statues from Perge. The Tünektepe cable car above the beach gives wide views over the bay and the mountains.

Lara and the east

Lara is the hotel strip east of the city. The lower Düden waterfall drops straight into the sea from the Lara cliffs, and the upper Düden falls lie in a park on the northern edge of town. Perge and Aspendos are further east along the D400.

The mountains behind the city

Termessos, a mountain city in Güllük Dağı National Park, is the classic half-day drive. The Karain Cave, one of Turkey’s oldest prehistoric sites, is nearby. In winter, the Saklıkent ski area about an hour inland is a surprise – not to be confused with the Saklıkent gorge near Fethiye.

Antalya’s beaches and where to park

Konyaaltı Beach

A long pebble beach with a promenade, cycle path and cafés. Public sections are free and sunbeds are paid. There are paid car parks along the beach park; they fill up on summer afternoons and weekends.

Lara Beach

Fine sand, though much of the frontage belongs to hotels. The public beach area has paid parking and simple facilities, and it is a quick drive from the airport.

Mermerli Beach

A tiny beach below the walls of Kaleiçi, reached through a restaurant that charges an entry fee. Park outside the old town and walk down.

Topçam Beach

A quieter, pine-backed beach west of Konyaaltı on the road to Kemer, with paid entry for cars in season. Good when the city beaches are crowded.

When to visit Antalya and rent a car

Antalya is a year-round city, so its rental prices change less than the resorts’: published averages run from about €29 a day in January to €41 in May. The sea is warm enough for swimming from May to October and warmest in August, while winters are mild but bring most of the rain between December and February. For Termessos and other walks, choose April–May or October–November; summer middays often go above 35°C.

Before you book

Deposit, payment card and tolls: know the difference before you book

These three conditions cause most surprises at a rental desk in Antalya. Each offer shows them before you pay.

No Deposit

Many local suppliers rent without a security deposit or accept it in cash. Others block an amount on a card until the car is returned. The offer shows which.

No-deposit guide

No Credit Card

Local suppliers commonly accept a debit card or cash at pickup. International brands usually want a credit card in the main driver’s name.

Motorway tolls (HGS)

Turkish toll roads are fully electronic. Rental cars carry an HGS tag and the company charges the tolls after the rental, so ask how it bills them.

Driving in Antalya: parking, roads and tips

City traffic

Antalya’s main boulevards are busy, with trams and many traffic lights. Allow time outside the rush hours.

Parking

Use the paid car parks around Kaleiçi and the beaches; the old town lanes are not for cars.

Roads out

The D400 runs east and west along the coast without tolls. The Termessos road climbs steeply into the mountains.

Trams in the centre

Antalya’s tram lines run along several main avenues. Watch for tracks when turning, never stop on them and give trams priority.

Kaleiçi is not for cars

Only residents and some hotel guests may drive into the old town. Use the paid car parks on the edge of Kaleiçi and walk in.

Speed cameras on the D400

The coast road towards Kemer and Belek has frequent speed and traffic-light cameras, with limits that change between urban and open sections.

Good to know in Turkey

  1. Drive on the right and overtake on the left.
  2. Speed limits for cars are usually 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on two-way roads, 110 km/h on divided roads and 130 km/h on motorways. Follow the signs.
  3. The alcohol limit for car drivers is 0.5 g/l. The safest choice is not to drink at all.
  4. Seat belts are compulsory in every seat; phones only hands-free.
  5. Motorway, bridge and some tunnel tolls are electronic. Do not stop at the toll gates.
  6. In an accident, call the rental company first and follow its instructions. Insurance usually needs an official report.
