Pickup

Plan your Dalaman pickup around a seasonal airport.

Dalaman is a holiday airport with an international and a domestic terminal. Flights peak from May to October, and most rental demand comes in those months. Local companies usually meet you in the arrivals hall; some have offices in Dalaman town a few minutes away.

Without a car, transfers from Dalaman to Fethiye, Ölüdeniz or Kaş are long and comparatively expensive. With one, you can stop in Göcek, explore the Dalyan river and the rock tombs, and reach beaches such as Kabak or Butterfly Valley viewpoints on your own schedule.

Fethiye and Marmaris also have plenty of rental offices. If you only want a car for part of your stay, compare an airport pickup with delivery to your hotel later in the week.

Roads around Ölüdeniz, Faralya and Kabak are steep and narrow. A small car with a decent engine is easier to park and handle than a large SUV.

Motorway tolls (HGS)

Turkish toll roads are fully electronic. Rental cars carry an HGS tag and the company charges the tolls after the rental, so ask how it bills them.

How tolls work
On the road

Driving from Dalaman Airport: routes and tolls

East to Göcek and Fethiye

The D400 passes through the Göcek Tunnel, which is tolled electronically. The car’s HGS tag records the passage. The older mountain road avoids the tunnel but is slower and steeper.

West to Dalyan, Köyceğiz and Marmaris

Follow the D400 west through Ortaca for Dalyan, then on past Köyceğiz lake. For Marmaris, leave the D400 and follow the road south to the coast.

The Lycian coast

Beyond Fethiye the D400 continues to Kalkan and Kaş, a scenic but winding road with steep drops to the sea. Drive it in daylight if you can.

Göcek Tunnel

The D400 towards Fethiye goes through the Göcek Tunnel, billed via HGS. The old mountain road avoids it but is slower.

Rural roads at night

Around Ortaca and Dalyan, expect tractors and animals on unlit roads after dark.

Early flights

Many return flights leave early in the morning. Allow time for check-in queues in peak season.

Good to know in Turkey

  1. Drive on the right and overtake on the left.
  2. Speed limits for cars are usually 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on two-way roads, 110 km/h on divided roads and 130 km/h on motorways. Follow the signs.
  3. The alcohol limit for car drivers is 0.5 g/l. The safest choice is not to drink at all.
  4. Seat belts are compulsory in every seat; phones only hands-free.
  5. Motorway, bridge and some tunnel tolls are electronic. Do not stop at the toll gates.
  6. In an accident, call the rental company first and follow its instructions. Insurance usually needs an official report.
